American Staffordshire Terrier Caucasian Shepherd Dog Mix History

All hybrid or designer dogs are tough to get a good read on as there isn’t much history to them. Breeding specific dogs like this has become common in the last twenty years or so even though I am sure that this mixed breed found it’s share of dogs to the shelter due to accidental breeding. We will take a closer look at the history of both parent breeds below. If you are looking at breeders for new, designer dogs please beware of Puppy Mills. These are places that mass produce puppies, specifically for profit and don’t care at all about the dogs. If you have a few minutes, please sign our petition to stop puppy mills.

American Staffordshire Terrier History

The American Staffordshire Terrier, which is also known as the Amstaff, is a medium-sized, short-coated American dog breed. It is a bully type breed and might be recognized as a pitbull. Several dog breeds were created to participate in and be good in blood sports. They fought one another, or they worked together against staked bear or bull, with spectators betting on who would win. Fortunately, such repulsive pastimes and pleasures are no longer legal. In most dog breeds, no one really knows what their true genetic composition is as specialized breeding has always occurred to garner certain traits. For this breed in particular we are certain that people with an interest in blood sports combined the stocky build and punishing jaws of old-style Bulldogs with the innate courage and “gameness” of terriers to create bull-type terrier breeds. Even though its name has Staffordshire in it, it was originally bred in the nineteenth century in Birmingham, and not in Staffordshire. It is a Pit Bull, Bully type breed that had a name change. While there are still people out there who fight dogs for pleasure, the well-bred AmStaff of today is much more of a companion dog than his pit-fighting ancestors.

Caucasian Shepherd Dog History

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is one of the elder Molosser breeds (a large powerful breed). Their exact origin is a bit of a mystery. We do know that they probably started in the Caucasus Mountain region and have been around for more than 2,000 years. They more than likely came from wolves that were interbred with Mastiffs and other breeds. They hail from modern day Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Dagestan. Like virtually all breeds of dogs they were bred for multi-purpose. To help watch over the shepherd with the flock, herd, protect, and hunt. When you live in country that has wolves and bears, a strong powerful dog to help watch over every thing is invaluable. Like many strong powerful breeds their skills were put to use as prisoner guard dogs and military work. They are great companion dogs and can still be found with shepherds helping to tend their flocks.

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems as all breeds are susceptible to some things more than others. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. If they won’t do this, then look no more and don’t consider that breeder at all. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur.
