Chow Chow History

The Chow Chow (Chow for short) is an impressive-looking dog. They have a large mane of hair that makes him look very different than other, more common dogs. They are known for being aggressive and their looks might make you think that, however, a well-bred and well-raised Chow isn't aggressive.
He is known to be dignified and aloof, as befits a breed that was once kept in imperial Chinese kennels. He is also known for having the nobility of a lion.
He is known for being the strong, quiet type with loyalty that extends to the whole family, but he will more than likely find one person to really bond with. His strength means that he responds very well to positive reinforcement and won’t do well with hostile treatment. Like all dogs, it is imperative that you socialize them properly. He will do much better with strangers if this is the case. This is, however, a highly territorial and protective breed, who'll give a clear warning to anyone approaching without his person's welcome.
Aside from their mane and their other features, they are known for their blue-black tongue. He also stands out for his almost straight rear legs, which give him a stiff, choppy, or stilted gait. These stiff legs don’t make him a great runner, so it is best to exercise him with a nice long walk.
It is thought that the Chow Chow probably originated in the high steppe regions of Siberia or Mongolia. They were later used to temple guards in China, Mongolia and Tibet. As early as 150 years before the time of Christ, a bas-relief includes a hunting dog similar in appearance to the Chow. Later Chow Chows were bred as a general-purpose working dog for herding, hunting, pulling and guarding. Based on the records we currently have, some historians believe that the Chow was the dog described as accompanying the Mongolian armies as they invaded southward into China as well as west into Europe and southwest into the Middle East in the 13th century AD. There is an ancient Chinese legend that mentions large war dogs from Central Asia that resembled black-tongued lions.

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems as all breeds are susceptible to some things more than others. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. If they won’t do this, then look no more and don’t consider that breeder at all. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur.
