All hybrid or designer dogs are tough to get a good read on as there isn’t much history to them. Breeding specific dogs like this has become common in the last twenty years or so even though I am sure that this mixed breed found it’s share of dogs to the shelter due to accidental breeding. We will take a closer look at the history of both parent breeds below. If you are looking at breeders for new, designer dogs please beware of Puppy Mills. These are places that mass produce puppies, specifically for profit and don’t care at all about the dogs. If you have a few minutes, please sign our petition to stop puppy mills.

Coton de Tulear History

The Coton de Tulear was developed on the island of Madagascar. It is still the island's national dog. (Madagascar is still an island nation in East Africa). The best guess is that the Tenerife dog was brought to the island and mated with some native dogs which went on to create the Coton. Most of these original dogs were more than likely brought to the island aboard pirate ships in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were more than likely used as companions on the boats as well as to control rats. Although it doesn’t have a strong prey drive, so no one really knows. At one point in time the Malagasy royalty were the only people allowed to keep them. Over time they made their way to France and then to the rest of the world.

Portuguese Podengo Pequeno History

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, also known as the Podengo Portugues or the Portuguese Warren Hound. This is a rather small dog. It is also a rather old breed of dog, dating back as far as 600 B.C to the Romans and Phoenicians. Like most dog breeds its main purpose was to help the people hunt. They were best at flushing out rabbits and were used primarily for this purpose. They were also good at catching and killing vermin. In the 1600’s they were placed on American bound ships to help kill the rodents that had stowed away and to help preserve the food supply and keep the disease level to a minimum.

A mix like this one that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia should really be on fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as soon as possible. A good diet to look into is Raw Food Diet.
