Golden Retriever Husky Mix History

The Golden Retriever Husky mix is a recent designer dog when it has been specifically bred. However, I am sure this mixes have been accidentally occurring for some time. Being that it is not a purebred dog there is not much of a history to go off of. However, here is a brief history of both parent breeds.

The Siberian Husky is a medium size working dog breed that originated in north-eastern Siberia, Russia. The breed belongs to the Spitz genetic family and was originally bred to pull sleds over long distances rather quickly. They are known to be escape artists that will dig themselves out of the strongest fence. Being that they were bred to pull things you can imagine that they aren’t the easiest dogs to walk.

The Golden Retriever was originally bred in Scotland in the mid-19th century. When they were initially bred and created the existing retriever dogs weren’t cutting it for the wealthy Scottish elite who liked to hunt waterfowl. The existing retriever breeds were inadequate for retrieving downed game from both water and land. Retrieving from both land and water was necessary because the hunting grounds of the time were pocketed with marshy ponds and rivers. Consequently, the best water spaniels were crossed with the existing retrievers, resulting in the establishment of the breed today known as the Golden Retriever.

Golden Retriever Husky Mix Personality

The Goberian is a friendly dog taking after both the Retriever and the Husky. They enjoy being social with people and being a part of the family. They can get some rather intense drive from the Husky. They might make a decent watchdog in that they will bark and let you know that someone or something is around that you don’t want. This is an active dog that is going to require a lot of exercise. He isn’t going to be content just laying on the couch inside all day. He is good with other pets and children as he is a friendly guy. The Goberian should be pretty easy to train as they aim to please and are friendly. As with all dogs and puppies, it is extremely important to properly socialize your goberian. Not enough can be said as to how important it is to properly socialize your young dog. This let’s them really understand how to interact with other dogs.

Golden Retriever Husky Mix Health

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems as all breeds are susceptible to some things more than others. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. If they won’t do this, then look no more and don’t consider that breeder at all. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition.

The Husky mixed with Golden Retriever might be prone to OCD, epilepsy, heart problems, bloat, cancer, Von Willebrand's Disease, Joint dysplasia, eye problems and allergies.

Do not purchase a puppy from a breeder who cannot provide you with written documentation that the parents were cleared of health problems that affect the breed. A careful breeder and one who truly cares about the breed itself, screens their breeding dogs for genetic disease and breed only the healthiest and best-looking specimens. One of the most common health problems with dogs is obesity. Keeping this under control is your responsibility.

Golden Retriever Husky Mix Care

The Husky Golden Retriever mix is going to shed a lot, so get ready to have a good vacuum handy and be prepared to brush him a couple of times a week. Give him baths as needed, but not so much that you dry out his skin. I’ve already talked about how he needs a lot of exercise. Never tie your dog up outside - that is inhumane and not fair to him. The Goberian can be a great escape artists so if left in the backyard (temporarily of course,) they will be tough to keep in. You will need to make sure the fence is extremely secure and buried a couple of feet in the ground. Plan on taking them for extremely long walks and hikes to keep their energy level down.

They will be very good with children and should be easy to train. They will also enjoy playing fetch, lots and lots of fetch. As the Retriever was obviously bred to retrieve and bring things back.

Golden Retriever Husky Mix Feeding

A lot of times diet is done on a per-dog basis. Each one is unique and has different dietary requirements. Most dogs in the U.S. are overweight. A mix like this one that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia should really be on fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as soon as possible.

Overfeeding any dog is not a good idea as that can really exacerbate health problems such as elbow and hip dysplasia.

A good diet to look into is Raw Food Diet. A raw food diet will be especially good for the Wolf background.
