Hokkaido History

The Hokkaido dog is a Spitz type of working dog. Other names of the breed include Ainu-ken, Seta, and Ainu dog. It originated on the main island of Hokkaido in Japan. It is crazy to think but some experts think the Hokkaido is one of the oldest dog breeds to exist. That is saying something because there are some really old breeds of dogs, including the Greyhound, etc.
Of course, they were originally bred to hunt. Being that they are an island breed they have not interbred with a lot of other dogs. However, they do have a black tongue which hints that they might be related to the Chow Chow or Shar Pei.
They are a tough and fearless breed that are willing to help hunt and pursue bears.

Swedish Lapphund History

The Swedish Lapphund comes from Sweden. It is sometimes called the Swedish Lappie. It comes from the Spitz family which makes it in line with other northern breeds, such as a Husky or Malamute. It is named after Lapland in the nordic countries. Like a lot of spitz breeds they were working dogs and helped to herd reindeer. She is a well rounded working dog. They are thought to be one of the most ancient breeds, which is a bold statement. There are only thought to be about one thousand of these in existence today. They almost went extinct in the 1950s.

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems as all breeds are susceptible to some things more than others. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. If they won’t do this, then look no more and don’t consider that breeder at all. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur. "A lot of times diet is done on a per-dog basis. Each one is unique and has different dietary requirements. Most dogs in the U.S. are overweight. A mix like this one that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia should really be on fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as soon as possible. A good diet to look into is Raw Food Diet.
