The Icelandic Sheep Dog (Icie and Icelandic Spitz are common nicknames) is an interesting breed. First, it has two dewclaws on its back legs. Second, it is a herding breed but was also bred to protect flocks of sheep from birds of prey! Apparently the modern dog still likes to monitor the sky for aerial predators. They are a very ancient breed of dog that were companions to the vikings and are thought to be nearly 8,000 years old. They obviously thrive in colder climates and do well with experienced owners. They are a herding breed but are also an all around good watch and working dog. They enjoy being around family.



Spanish Water Dog History

The Spanish Water Dog goes by the name of the Perro de Agua in Spanish. It’s genetic lineage can be traced back to the Portuguese Water Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, the Poodle, and the French Barbet. The SWD obviously comes from Spain. More specifically it is thought to come from northern Spain.They are a versatile breed that were primarily used as herding dogs. Herding goats and sheep. They were also good in the water and were used by fishermen. They are known for being very intelligent, loyal, and affectionate. They have a very strong natural herding and guarding instinct. Because they are so versatile and athletic they can excel at a number of tasks. They were officially recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2001.

Plan on taking them for extremely long walks and hikes to keep their energy level down. This mix will more than likely have a high energy level. This exercise will keep them from being destructive. What are the training requirements?

This is an intelligent dog that will be a little bit challenging to train. They are going to want to take the alpha position and need someone with a firm, strong, hand that can let them know their place. It might have a prey drive and be disposed to running for and chasing small prey, but if handled properly this can be managed. All dogs respond best to positive reinforcement. So make sure to praise her when she does well. She is an intelligent dog who loves to please, and loves a physical challenge. The more exercise she gets the easier she will be to train.
