Rafeiro do Alentejo History

The Rafeiro do Alentejo is not a common breed of dog. It is also known as the Portuguese Watchdog. There is not a lot of information on it, but it is believed to have originated in the Middle East. Like most dog breeds they were used to protect flocks of sheep and goats in the mountains. As well as while they migrated their animals back and forth from the mountains to the lowlands. It is a large dog with a very large head.

Redbone Coonhound History

The Redbone Coonhound, oftentimes referred to as a “Red.” This is typically a kind and gentle breed. They were brought to the United States by Scottish and Irish immigrants. They are typically friendly but they also like to bark/howl like a typical hound so you might want to get ready for that. They were bred to work and run so make sure you give them plenty of exercise. They are known to have originated via a breeder in Tennessee by the name of Peter Redbone. They were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1910.

The Rafeiro do Alentejo and the Redbone Coonhound are known for being courageous and protective. They are also very loving dogs. This dog will require a very strong and firm owner who makes sure to assert that they are the alpha and not the dog. They are cautious, yet non-threatening with strangers, and are affectionate towards family and children. Early socialization helps take care of any bad habits that could develop. She responds well to positive reinforcement, like all dogs. She should be rather affectionate and enjoy spending lots of time with you. Don’t plan on leaving her alone for long periods as he won’t do well alone. She wants to be with the “pack.”
